SUMMARY:AMSP How Not to be Wrong\, with Jordan Ellenberg
DESCRIPTION:In ‘How Not to be Wrong’\, Jordan presents the surprising revelations to a multitude of diverse questions such as: \n‘How early should you get to the airport?’ \n‘What does “public opinion” really represent?’ \n‘Why do tall parents have shorter children?’ \nIn his talk\, Jordan will debunk the view that the maths we learn at school is a dull set of rules\, laid down by the ancients\, not to be questioned. He will explore how maths touches everything we do and will allow us to see the hidden structures beneath the messy and chaotic surface of our daily lives. \nThis fascinating talk will ignite your curiosity and leave you with a host of responses to “when will I ever use that?” \nKey Facts\n\n\n\nEvent ref: #9106\n\n\n\n\nAudience: Teachers\n\n\n\n\nCurriculum focus: Core Maths\n\n\n\n\nMathematical focus: Problem Solving\n\n\n\n\nEvent format: Live Online Professional Development\n\n\n\n\nEvent length: 1 hour\n\n\n\n\nOnline sessions: 6\n\n\n\n\nRegion: National\n\n\n\n\nDate: Wed 26th Jan 2022\n\n\n\n\nCourse times: 16:30 – 17:30\n\n\n\n\nFee: Free for teachers in England

SUMMARY:AMSP Maths on Trial with Coralie Colmez and Leila Schneps
DESCRIPTION:In the wrong hands\, maths can be deadly. Even the simplest numbers can become powerful forces when manipulated by politicians or the media\, but in the case of the law your liberty (and even your life) can depend on using the right mathematics. \nOur Winter Festival finale is brought to you by Leila Schneps and Coralie Colmez\, the truly inspiring mother and daughter co-authors of ‘Math on Trial: How Numbers Get Used and Abused in the Courtroom’. Leila is an American mathematician and fiction writer and works at French National Centre for Scientific Research on number theory. Coralie read mathematics at Cambridge University\, won the Ryan Prize in Higher Mathematics and is also Director and Co-Founder of the student destination platform\, Unifrog. \nDuring this enlightening talk\, Coralie will explore cases from the book with an emphasis on how to use them in the classroom. Leila will then delve into some new cases and demonstrate how to think about the world around us with an awareness of error. There will also be an opportunity to find out more about Unifrog and the extensive resources available for maths teachers and students. \nPlease note that this talk is 1.5 hours in order to provide plenty of time for questions at the end. If you are only able to attend from 4.30pm-5.30pm then you will still get to hear the full Maths on Trial talk. \nKey Facts\n\n\n\nEvent ref: #9144\n\n\n\n\nAudience: Teachers\n\n\n\n\nCurriculum focus: Core Maths\n\n\n\n\nMathematical focus: Statistics\, Problem Solving\n\n\n\n\nEvent format: Live Online Professional Development\n\n\n\n\nEvent length: 1.5 hours\n\n\n\n\nOnline sessions: 6\n\n\n\n\nRegion: National\n\n\n\n\nDate: Thu 27th Jan 2022\n\n\n\n\nCourse times: 16:30 – 18:00\n\n\n\n\nFee: Free for teachers in England
