SUMMARY:LivMS Christmas Lecture - Online event
DESCRIPTION:Date: 15 Dec\, 2021\nTime: 14:00\nPresenter: Simon Singh\nTitle: Christmas Lecture: Fermat’s last theorem\nAudience: Year 11 up\nVenue: Online\nRegistration: Via the Eventbrite page for the event\nhttps://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/christmas-lecture-fermats-last-theorem-tickets-168104628469\nContact: Peter Giblin\n\n\nSimon Singh https://simonsingh.net/ \, best-selling author of “Fermat’s Last Theorem”\, talks about the most notorious problem in the history of mathematics. \n  \nRarely can a scribbled note in a margin have provoked so much mathematical curiosity as Pierre de Fermat‘s infamous conjecture\, discovered after his death\, that no three positive whole numbers a\,a\, b\,b\, and cc satisfy the equation anan + bnbn = cncn for any whole-number value of nn greater than 2. \nFermat claimed to have a proof\, but left no record of it\, stating only that the margin was too small to contain it. This unproven result became known as Fermat’s Last Theorem. Generations of mathematicians tried and failed across more than three centuries to prove the general case\, though it was proved for numerous particular values of nn (even by Fermat for nn = 4). Finally in 1994\, Andrew (later Sir Andrew) Wiles announced to the world that the problem was solved\, though there were some gaps which were filled by Wiles and his former student Richard Taylor. \nSimon Singh made an award-winning documentary about this achievement and also wrote a best-selling book. In this lecture\, he will talk us through the history of Fermat’s Last Theorem and give us an idea of how it was eventually proved using ground-breaking new mathematics.

SUMMARY:LivMS Popular Lecture - Online event
DESCRIPTION:Date: 18 Nov\, 2021\nTime: 17:00-18:00\nPresenter: Chris Pritchard\nTitle: Great Mathematical Diagrams\nAudience: Year 11 up\nVenue: TBC (either in-person or online depending on circumstances)\nRegistration: Via the Eventbrite page for the event\nhttps://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/great-mathematical-diagrams-tickets-169822771481\nContact: Peter Giblin\n\n\nChris Pritchard is the 2021-22 President of the Mathematical Association. \nThe talk is a journey through mathematical diagrams\, some famed for their importance and longevity\, some critical for the information they convey and many of them just plain clever. Join me for a look at a range of visual material from the Bride’s Chair of Euclid’s Elements to the Königsberg bridges and from Playfair’s pie chart to Anscombe’s salutary lesson\, whilst also enjoying some “proofs without words” which can be deployed profitably in the classroom.

DESCRIPTION:Date: Wednesday 13 Oct\, 2021\nTime: 17:00-18:00\nPresenter: Colva Roney-Dougal\nTitle: Party hard! The maths of connections\nAudience: Year 11 up\, teachers and all interested in mathematics\nVenue: Online\nContact: Peter Giblin\nRegistration: Via the Eventbrite page for the event\nhttps://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/party-hard-the-maths-of-connections-tickets-168099561313\n\n\n  \nHow many guests need to come to a party\, to guarantee that either at least five of them all know each other or at least five are mutual strangers? This question turns out to be surprisingly hard to solve\, and has led to the creation of some maths that feels more like a newspaper puzzle than real work. We’ll explore connections ranging from friendship\, through marriage\, to the spread of infectious diseases.

SUMMARY:LivMS Pop Maths Quiz - online
DESCRIPTION:Example question: If the outer circle has radius 12 cm.\, what is the radius of the dark red circles? \nPresenters: Barry Grantham\, Tony Carter\, Ian Jarman \nTitle: Sixth Form Pop Maths Quiz \nAudience: Sixth Form \nVenue: online via Zoom \nThe Pop Maths Quiz is a TEAM competition that runs a bit like a Pub Quiz but without any alcohol! \nSchools are invited to enter one or more teams. \nTeams consist of 4 students (under 19 years) who\, during the Quiz\, work together to attempt to solve a number of questions on a wide range of mathematical topics. \nThey then have the opportunity to submit their answers via a Google Form. \nNot all questions require specific A-level maths knowledge but all questions have a mathematical flavour. \nCertificates will be awarded to all winners and entrants and the school names will be published on the LivMS website. \nUnfortunately\, it will not be possible to award prizes this year.  \nFor more details of the 2021 event  click here

Angela will explore this question and other aspects of her research. In addition\, she will take us on a tour of the darker side of the origins of the statistical techniques we teach our students today. \nWe hope you will leave enlightened and with increased confidence to tackle challenging contexts in the classroom.

These Core Maths skills are more relevant today than they have ever been. And one of the most engaging ways to learn about them is through sport! \nYou may not realise this\, but Maths Inspiration guru and author of eleven books\, Rob Eastaway\, has been instrumental in developing the way in which sporting performance has been measured throughout the world. With examples that range from football to tennis\, cricket to darts\, Rob will explore the maths of sport\, revealing how analytical techniques are used to rank the world’s top performers\, improve player strategies\, and make contests fairer. \nWhether you are a sports nut\, just somebody who occasionally watches a big match on TV or not interested in sport at all\, this fascinating talk will give you insights into what sport can teach us about ranking and decision making in every walk of life.

DESCRIPTION:This event is cancelled due to Coronavirus. \nThe University of Liverpool has made the decision to postpone or cancel all of the University’s public events until the end of April due to the COVID-19 situation. \nIt might be possible to re-arrange the Prize Evening on a new date later this year\, but if necessary\, it is our intention to make alternative arrangements\, if we can\, for the publication of results and distribution of prizes and certificates. We don’t want pupils and schools to be disappointed. This could\, for example\, be achieved by sending prizes and certificates to schools for internal distribution. \nWe will make further announcements about this as the effects of the spread of COVID-19 become known. \n\n\nPresenter: Alison Carter\nTitle: LivMS Open Challenge Prize Evening 2020\nAudience: LivMS Open Challenge entrants\, teachers\, parents and guests\nVenue: Central Teaching Laboratory\, University of Liverpool\nContact: Alison Carter\n\nThis event will take place at the same time and in the same venue as the MEM Senior Challenge Prize Evening.
