We’ll be raising money for charity throughout the show\, and crossing over with Mark Watson’s 24h live comedy show Watsonathon\, which is running at the same time. DESCRIPTION:Example question: If the outer circle has radius 12 cm.\, what is the radius of the dark red circles? \nPresenters: Barry Grantham\, Tony Carter\, Ian Jarman \nTitle: Sixth Form Pop Maths Quiz \nAudience: Sixth Form \nVenue: Liverpool John Moores University\, James Parsons Building\, Byrom Street\, Liverpool\, L3 3AF \nThe Pop Maths Quiz is a TEAM competition that runs a bit like a Pub Quiz but without any alcohol! \nSchools are invited to enter one or more teams (up to a maximum of 4 teams). \nTeams consist of 4 students (under 19 years) who\, during the Quiz\, work together to attempt to solve a number of questions on a wide range of mathematical topics. \nThey then have the opportunity to give their answers via an electronic response system. \nNot all questions require specific A-level maths knowledge but all questions have a mathematical flavour. \nThere are substantial prizes awarded to the winners on the day and the school names will be published on the LivMS website. \nCertificates will be awarded to all winners and entrants. \nFor more details of the 2020 event  click here

Such features include the circular shape of the primary and secondary bows\, Alexander’s dark band\, order of the colours\, angle of the bows in the sky and many others. These will be discussed with the help of some secondary school geometry.

DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Caucher Birkar \nTitle: Algebra vs Geometry \nAudience: Sixth form\, undergraduate and general \nVenue: Rotblat Lecture Theatre\, University of Liverpool \nContact: Alice Rizzardo \n\nThis is a lecture aimed at undergraduate students\, and this year’s speaker is Prof. Caucher Birkar\, who just won the Fields Medal last year – this is the highest honor in mathematics\, similar to the Nobel Prize in other fields. The lecture should be of interest also to sixth form students and all those interested in algebra or geometry. \nAbstract: The fields of algebra and geometry interact in numerous ways. This has a long history going back to thousands of years ago. In this talk I will discuss some of those interactions with a particular emphasis on algebraic geometry. \nCaucher Birkar is a professor at the University of Cambridge. He grew up on a subsistence farm in the Kurdistan province of Iran during the Iran-Iraq war\, and relocated to the UK as a refugee in 2000. In 2004 he received his PhD from Nottingham University. He has made fundamental contributions to birational geometry and the minimal model program. Among many honors\, he was awarded the 2010 Leverhulme Prize in mathematics and statistics for “his outstanding contributions to fundamental research in algebraic geometry”\, the 2010 Prize of the Fondation Sciences Mathématiques de Paris\, the 2016 AMS Moore Prize\, and became a fellow of the Royal Society in 2019. In 2018 he received the Fields Medal\, the highest honor in mathematics\, “for the proof of the boundedness of Fano varieties and for contributions to the minimal model program”. \n

Dr Nira Chamberlain is also in listed by the Science Council as ‘one of the UK’s top 100 Scientist’ and in 2015 joined the elite list of distinguish mathematicians who featured in the biographical reference book Who’s Who. As well as this Nira Chamberlain is one of the few British Mathematicians to feature in the Encyclopedia of Mathematics & Society. The encyclopedia highlights two of Nira’s mathematical models and their impact on the field of naval engineering. This has included periods in France\, the Netherlands\, Germany and Israel. During his career Nira has been an invited to speak at several prestigious events such as the New Scientist’s Live\, The Royal Society -Destination STEMM\, Oxford University – Reddick Lecture\, and at King College London – The Maxwell Lecture to name a few. \n
