SUMMARY:LivMS Popular Lecture: Assessing England's Water Environment: a statistical story
DESCRIPTION:Assessing England’s Water Environment: a statistical story\nDr Eleanor D’Arcy (Environment Agency) \nFace to face lecture\, venue to be confirmed (in Liverpool) \nSuitable for students aged 11 up\, their teachers and anyone interested in mathematics \nAbout the talk \nEleanor will talk about the importance of statistics in understanding the state of the natural environment as part of the Defra funded Natural Capital and Ecosystem Assessment programme. This is a science innovation and transformation programme set up to collect data on the extent\, condition and change over time of England’s land and water environments\, as part of the UK government’s commitment to leave the environment in a better state for future generations. Statistics is a fundamental part of the programme\, from designing networks for data collection through to analysis and inference. \nAbout the speaker \nDr Eleanor D’Arcy is a senior advisor in Statistics at the Environment Agency. Eleanor’s interests lie with environmental and ecological statistics to help tackle climate change. She completed her PhD at Lancaster University on ‘Extreme value methods for protecting and maintaining critical infrastructure from natural hazards’ which was in collaboration with EDF Energy. \nIn 2023-24\, she was a William Guy lecturer for the Royal Statistical Society\, where she spoke to sixth form students across the UK about statistics for extreme sea level estimation. \nThe talk is free but registration is required via TicketSource
