SUMMARY:LivMS Popular Lecture: Brain Teasers and Puzzles
DESCRIPTION:Brain Teasers and Puzzles\, from the Middle Ages to Modern Science\nTiago Hirth (University of Lisbon) \nFace to face lecture\, venue to be confirmed (in Liverpool) \nSuitable for students aged 11 up\, their teachers and anyone interested in mathematics \nAbout the talk \nCan you match the wits of the Carolingian court? What about the Wasan teasers that puzzled Samurai? \nIn this interactive presentation\, the audience is taken on a journey through time and space. We’ll skip the textbooks and focus on the recreations that entertained the people of the past and provide play for those of the present. Through it we’ll stumble upon some mathematical nuggets. \nAbout the speaker \nTiago Hirth is a mathematician with a deep enthusiasm for the playful side of the subject\, including magic\, movement\, and games. In his free time\, he actively engages in science outreach\, organising events\, and teaching others. Since 2018\, he has been affiliated with the Interuniversity Centre for the History of Science and Technology at The University of Lisboa. As a co-founder of Circo Matemático\, he has spent over a decade blending mathematics with the art of circus performance. His main interests lie in Recreational Mathematics\, the Conjuring Arts\, and their historical backgrounds. \nThe talk is free but registration is required via TicketSource
