Watch this space for details of 2021 Masterclasses, which we hope will take place on 4 Saturdays in the Autumn term

23rd October, 6th November, 20th November and 4th December 2021 – to be confirmed

2020 was our 30th Year of MEM Masterclasses!

Because of the impact of COVID-19, MEM reluctantly cancelled the usual programme of Saturday Masterclasses which would have been hosted by the universities and schools in Liverpool and Wirral.

Instead, some Masterclass material has been adapted and is released to Y8 and Y9 pupils via this webpage. This adapted Masterclass material can be studied by pupils at home. The date for submitting answers to some of the exercises to MEM for marking (30th November 2020) has passed but the material continues to be available to download.

We hope you enjoy these online versions of the Masterclasses.

Teachers may nominate up to four pupils they think will benefit from the activities, and the pupils should be in Year 7 or 8 during 2020/21.

What are the MEM Masterclasses?

The Masterclasses materials provide an excellent opportunity for able and enthusiastic pupils to explore a range of mathematical ideas. Topics covered are very varied, including fractals, logo and turtle graphics, origami, codes and ciphers, probability games, number magic, mathematicians, mechanics and juggling.

The 2012, 2015 and 2018 series of MEM Masterclasses were visited by a colleague from the Royal Institution who spent the day with us. Our activities were mentioned in the Royal Institution Spring 2013 Newsletter which you can view here
